Mustang get’s to help protect the Big Apple
According to the BLM recent story, a Mustang from the Twin Peaks HMA who was trained at the BLM Carson City Northern Nevada Correction facility has been transported to The BIG Apple to join the mounted police unit. The NYPD Mounted Unit, also known as the "Ten Foot Cops," is a significant part of the New York City Police Department (NYPD) and has been around since 1858. Primarily used for crowd control at events like demonstrations and parades, they also serve as a crime deterrent and can navigate areas inaccessible to vehicles. The unit is known for its strong bond between the officers and their horses, which are typically standardbred horses. This horse is no standardbred, this is a Mustang. As BLM states “In the bustle of one of the world’s most famous cities is a handsome police horse with a white symbol on his neck who embodies the spirit of the American West.”
The mounted officers are often referred to as "Ten Foot Cops" due to their height advantage on horseback. They represent the NYPD and the city to the world, and the horses' approachable nature can have a positive impact on community relations.
