Jackson Mountains Wild Horse Herd Management Area Plan Preliminary Environmental Assessment public comments due
The Bureau of Land Management has opened a public comment period on the proposed Jackson Mountains Wild Horse Herd Management Area Plan Preliminary Environmental Assessment in northern Nevada. This is an important moment for everyone who cares about keeping wild horses wild, protecting family bands, and demanding science-based, humane management on our public lands.
The Jackson Mountains Herd Management Area, or HMA, is located in Humboldt County, Nevada, approximately 30 miles northwest of Winnemucca and 40 miles south of Denio. According to BLM, the area includes 257,395 acres of public land managed by the agency, along with 7,579 acres of mixed private and other public lands.
BLM says the proposed Herd Management Area Plan, known as an HMAP, is intended to guide future management of wild horses within the HMA and set objectives for maintaining what the agency calls a “thriving natural ecological balance.”
