What Happens After the Roundup: Inside BLM's 2024 Triple B and Maverick-Medicine Roundup numbers
The Bureau of Land Management runs helicopter gathers across its Herd Management Areas, removing wild horses from the range in the name of "appropriate management levels." What happens to those animals afterward rarely gets much public scrutiny. A BLM "Gathered Animals" report ; the agency's own record of every horse captured, its disposition, and, when applicable, how and where it died…offers a rare, granular look.
I observered during this roundoup. For a a month during the winter incuding Thanksgiving the helicopters continued. Based on a report covering two Nevada Roundups ran from November 2 to December 3, 2024: the Triple B Complex (NV0417) and the Maverick-Medicine Complex (NV0105). Together, 2,193 horses were captured. With a little digging and some research this is what I found:
